Scale (music)
From GuitarWiki
In music, a scale is a set of musical notes that usually ascend in pitch. Examples of applications of scales to guitar playing include improvising (e.g. writing solos) and ear training. Often, melodies are constructed using a certain at a certain position on the neck as a template specifying which notes to make use off.
The Major scale has eight notes with the following intervals between each not: 1-(W)-2-(W)-3-(H)-4-(W)-5-(W)-6-(W)-7-(H)-8. For simplicity, the notes have been assigned the numbers 1 through 8, the letters in parenthesis denote the interval where a (W) is a whole step (i.e. two fret on a guitar neck) and a (H) is a half step in tone (one fret). The first (or root) note will determine the key of the scale. For example, in the key of C the major scale has the notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. This scale can be played any string for example the following tab:
e|-------------------------------------- B|-------------------------------------- G|-------------------------------------- D|-------------------------------------- A|--3--5--7--8--10--12--14--15---------- E|--------------------------------------
This scale can moved any where on the fretboard, changing it's key (the root note).
