History
Fender which was started in the 1940s by Leo Fender, started to produce hollow bodied and spanish style accoustic guitars, but in 1951 they released the Telecaster, which is widly recognised as the first solid bodied guitar which was mass produced. The guitar was primarially designed as a studio tool, and they are said to have not put much thought into the image of the guitar. After this they went on to create what is arguabily the most successful electric guitar in history, the Stratocaster (or 'Strat' for short).
Typically, Fender electric guitars have a bolt on necks, rather than the set neck which Gibson employs. This drastically reduces the production costs, which was one of the original concerns when choosing the bolt on neck style, so making the guitars available to more players.
Instruments Produced by Fender
Fender produces a range of both electric and acoustic guitars, as well as bass guitars.
