Amplifier
From GuitarWiki
(Redirected from Amplification)
A device for amplifying the signal of a guitar's pickups. A guitar usually plugs into an amp through a cord with two quarter inch jacks on either end. An electric guitar amplifier is seperate from other types of amplifier, such as a hi-fi amplifier, in that it has a non linear amplification curve. This type of amplification changes the sound of the guitar dramatically, and is one of the important pieces of equiptment in achieving a guitarist's sound.
Types of Amplifiers
- Tube (Or Valve) - These amplifiers use vacuume-tubes as part of their electronics, and so have a unique reaction to the sound signal.
- Solid State - Amplifisers said to be Solid State do not have any valves in their electronics, and often employ the use of printed circuit boards.
Technical AddOn: They use solid state electronic devices,i.e. devices which operate in thier solid state. They are electronic device which are built of semiconducters(eg. Silicon,Germanium etc).
- Combo - A Combo amplifier is one which has both the amplification unit, and the speakers in the same housing.
- Head Unit - Head Amplifiers are amplifiers which are seperate from the speakers. These units drive a seperate speaker cabinet or cabinets.
